Anchovies, anyone?
Confession time: I know we've been a little slack in the blogging department lately. Sorry. I got my sisters going and they're making me look bad! I hear Great Grandma Lacey (Grandma Great, as our kids call her) got a new computer - I'm sure she'll probably be out-posting us here in no time!
We have REALLY enjoyed the weather here the last few weeks. It's been just perfect! I know everyone north of us is probably sick of us rubbing it in (especially a particular sister after getting 17 inches of snow last week - yikes!), but summer will be here soon when Alaska, Idaho, and Montana will be sounding pretty darned good. And if you really are sick of the cold weather I hear that the housing situation down here makes for a great buyer's market. We'd LOVE to have some family join us here in Sin City!
We had a great day yesterday, just enjoying time outside and the chance to get some things done on some of our projects. We took the kids over to the District - an upscale shopping center down the road just a few miles. They just installed a new carousel that the kids have been excited to go ride. There are some pictures in the slide show here:
As for the title of this post...Jacob, for whatever reason, has had an ongoing fascination with anchovies for the past 6 months or so. Not sure where it originated but he's been bugging Amy to get him some for quite awhile now. So during a recent trip to the dollar store, Amy came across some anchovies, just like you'd envision them - in a little tin (or whatever they use now) can. So I'm at work, getting ready to come home from lunch, when I get a call from Jacob: "Dad, WE FOUND SOME ANCHOVIES AT THE STORE!!!" Amy says I better hurry quick - Jacob's ready to break them out.
So I get home and Jacob is ready to go. Of course we have to savor the moment by capturing the moment onfilm whatever-digital-term-we-use-now-instead.
Jacob couldn't wait to open them.
The Grand Opening:
Once we had them open we thought he'd chicken out and say, "Uh, no thanks!" I could have sworn they had fine little hair all over them. Ugh. :-p
OK, here's where Amy wasn't about to let her precious little 4 year-old dive in and eat some eel without an assurance that it wouldn't kill him - so she made me try one first!
"Hmmm, now THAT'S an interesting gustatory experience!"
I needed to gather every ounce of acting skill that I had so expertly honed during my high school plays to not pull a face and ruin it for Jacob! This is definitely one thing that won't get mistaken for tasting like chicken!
Alright, so now it's Jacob's turn. I'm sure at this point he was thinking, "Now, what did I just get myself into?!"
Here goes!
Down the hatch!
Jacob absolutely loved them!! So much so that he INSISTED that Amy try one, too (much to her dismay). What a sport!
But the GAG REFLEX triumphs!
Undeterred, Jacob downed the entire tin! Mmmmmm.
The dimple doesn't lie! (and if you look closely you'll see the new line of Spaghetti-O's that Jacob developed in the process!)
OK, I think I've officially lost my appetite now. So...on to other things!
Amy is excited to head to Nashville with Ali and Val on Thursday to record the FlyKids album. They'll spend Friday meeting with the session producer and FlyLady, et. al., to discuss their plan. Then they'll do the recording on Saturday and fly back Sunday morning. I'm sure they'll also have opportunities to go see & hear some of the sights and sounds of the Nashville scene while they're there. I'm jealous! But I get a fun consolation prize of being able to take the kids on the Father and Sons (we'll be smuggling Anna in, too - Ssssh, don't tell!) outing this weekend. I reckon next week's post should be fun. :-)

Happy Birthday Jacob!
First of all, Happy Birthday to Jacob - our sweet, fun four year-old!!! Jacob had such a great day, eating gumballs from his new gumball machine, playing with his new Thomas the Tank Engine trains, and going to Red Robin (his favorite place to eat). He had his big party with friends at Chuck E. Cheese's on Saturday, and then a smaller one with our family and a couple friends tonight. He just had a great big grin that showed off his dimple all day long.
Dad Benson and Nate just showed up so we're excited to have them here while they're in town cheering on the Cougars in the Mountain West basketball tournament. We're also excited to have Natalie and Jared (I sure HOPE I got his name right!) come visit this weekend, too. He's definitely scoring initial points by being a big Cougar fan!
Amy's been frantically working on arrangements for the new FlyLady "FlyKids" CD that she, Ali, and Valerie have been putting together. She just got the go-ahead from Marla (the FlyLady), who is very excited about it. You'll have to hear how excited Marla was about it by downloading yesterday's episode of the "Now is the Time" radio show at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/nowisthetime/feed (if you have iTunes installed clicking on the link will subscribe to the radio blog). It's going to be SO fun. We're heading up to Logan next week so Amy can start putting together some arrangements, etc. for the songs.
We're loving the weather here right now: sunny and 70 degrees - aahhh! Wish you were all here to enjoy it!
Here are some pictures from Aaron's Robin Hood play he was in two weeks ago with the Missoula Children's Theater. He was a skunk and had a lot of fun.

Raining in Vegas
Hi Family and Friends,
It's actually been RAINING here in Las Vegas - Amazing! It was nice to fall asleep the other night to the melodic sound of rain on the roof.
The boys had a good time last Saturday riding their bikes at the park. Aaron was excited to ditch the training wheels that he had loathed for the past few months on his bike (we just hadn't taken the time to get him to an open space to try it out). He took like a duck to water, after after just a few "splashes," was up and going on his own. Jacob was keeping right up with him on his little bike. He's about worn it out riding it in the house across the tile floor. Anna's still spunky as ever and won't let her "bubbas" do anything without her jumping right in, too.
We were sad to hear of President Hinckley's passing, but we're sure he's enjoying his happy reunion with his dear Marjorie on the other side.
We hope you are all doing well. Take care and write back!

Here was Amy's letter to the Benson clan - this pretty much sums up our week...
Hi family!
We hope you all have had a good week despite all the sadness and uncertainty about Shannon. Our prayers are still going up for her every day and we have faith that if it is the Lord's will, she will be healed. We have had a good week despite Paul being gone to San Francisco doing training at Stanford. He liked the area and had a good work week while we got to play all week with Uncle Nate, who gave up a week of bachelorhood to watch kids, do dishes, volunteer at Aaron's school, etc. Really, he did everything a stay-at-home mom would do and I'm afraid we wore him out! But he was a great sport and the kids LOVED having him here. It made the separation from Paul SO much easier. Thanks Nate!
This week Paul is on the road again in San Francisco doing training for Chevron. So we're on our own and planning fun things to make the time go faster, as well as celebrate the season. We're going over to dinner at a friend's house tomorrow, baking treats for neighbors, attending Enrichment, and renting Christmas movies. We'll be fine, but will miss Paul a lot.
Here's the quick rundown of everyone:
Anna has officially learned the word "No!" and uses it every chance she gets. She is also like a mountain goat, climbing onto tables, couches, the piano, etc. She is talking up a storm and loves to look at Santa ornaments and say "Oh Oh Oh!" She let me put a hair band in her hair for a whole 45 seconds last night, which is a recent record. She likes "pretty" things sometimes, but we may have a little rough and tumble tomboy on our hands. She keeps up pretty good with "the bubbas." (the brothers)
Jacob is doing much better in nursery and hasn't been as aggressive to his buddy Matthew for a few weeks, which we are glad to hear. Jacob and Matthew have clashed on occasion, but they both seem to have grown out of it. Jacob wants trains, lots of trains, for Christmas and talks every day about the Polar Express still. He loved going with Uncle Nate last week to the Outlet Mall for story time and a carousel ride. He even got to ride in Nate's "champagne car."
Aaron was just named Student of the Month, which meant he got to have pizza on the stage with Mr. Darrington, the principal, during lunch. His big event this week was shopping at the "Holiday Shop" at school for all of us. He used his allowance money and got us all something for Christmas. They help the kids choose gifts, budget, buy, and wrap the presents. Last year he gave Jacob some stuffed dice (welcome to Vegas!), and Paul a light-up dolphin, so we can hardly wait to see what he has chosen this year.
I am doing quite well for all we have going on. The church auxiliaries are keeping me way busy. I sang at our ward's Young Women in Excellence last week and it went good. I'm also singing and helping with the Enrichment Christmas activity on Thursday. I also was in charge of the primary cookie decorating party last Friday too. Sunday I played the organ and today I accompanied a musical number. I have felt very used and needed this season. How I long for the days in the 7th ward of hearing all my favorites in Sacrament Meeting (Mom and Dad singing "No Room," the orchestra playing in the back of the chapel, Brother Joy leading and singing with gusto, and the Griffin family singing "I heard the bells on Christmas Day.") Those are sweet memories, though it's funny how you don't realize they will become treasured memories at the time. I hope after Christmas we can just have some singing time as a family. I haven't heard Mary's Lullaby yet and I'm missing all of you and your voices! Who is up for a big singalong when we're all together? Maybe even an encore performance of the brother's "reindeer dance?"
Paul is doing dishes right now while I type. What a good boy! I'm going to help him pack for his 4 AM departure. The kids are running wild, so I'd better sign off. If any of you are bored this week (or just feel bad for me), I'd love to chat so that I can have adult interaction. Please give me a call! We'll be fine with good neighbors, Christmas projects, and McDonald's playland down the road. Even so, wish us luck! Love to you all!
